EQUINE PASSPORTS
We have reached the time when no more extensions have been, or are likely to be, issued. DEFRA have stipulated that ALL horses in the UK over the age of 6 months, must have a passport and must be microchipped. You should be aware that horses at Shows may be checked for passports and you should always carry your passport with your horse when you travel even to a small local show. It is now illegal for anybody to buy or sell a horse unless it has a passport. If buying, please ask to see the passport before agreeing the purchase. If you want to be sure that there are no restrictions on the drugs your horse can be given – also that it will not enter the human food chain at any future time – be sure to complete Section IX in the passport. This can be signed by your vet or if at anytime the passport is returned to this office, can be signed then. Once you have completed the section stating the horse is not for human consumption it cannot be reversed by any future purchaser.
Any passport issued before 2002 needs to be checked to see if there is a sheet in it headed MEDICINAL TREATMENT. If it is not there, to have this sheet added free of charge, please send the passport to the office, with a stamped addressed envelope, for its return. Left is an example of the only horse Outline Description sheet that will now be accepted. This must be completed by a vet unless the horse has a microchip inserted when the owner may complete it. Please ensure that all markings and whorls shown in the diagram are clearly described in the written section. No other markings forms will be accepted in any format as they will not when folded, fit into our passports.
There are 2 types of application form:
- 1) to apply for a passport and registration. -

- 2) to apply for a passport for a horse not eligible for registration with us.
We can email you forms or if you send in a stamped addressed envelope we can post you hard copies.
Please check your passports on the first page bottom left. If you do not have a UELN 15 digit number shown please either email, fax or post a list of the horses names and UK Registration numbers of the passports that do not have these numbers. We will then send you out a label to be put on that page. Also please check your passports, if you do not have the section IX Medical treatments pages you need to send this in to the office (with a stamped addressed envelope for its return) to have these added.
